An OT may recommend a brushing program. It is a program that aims to improve the sense of touch and the sense of pressure. An improved sense of touch is needed for printing and improved touch/pressure helps by calming. Brushing with a standard scrub brush provides a balancing state to the brain. It involves stroking the brush along the surface of the skin in the same direction the hair grows. The softness or hardness of the brush can be varied to help desensitize the tactile system (skin). At school, the brushing motion occurs on the arms and wrists. The brushing can be performed over clothing. This sensory program is best provided at regular intervals.
