Muscles hold still, move, and they work in concert with other body parts. When the muscle works to hold the joint still, it is a static contraction. When the muscle works to allow controlled movement, it is a dynamic contraction. You lift a bucket of water off the floor with dynamic (moving) muscles and hold the pail still with your elbow slightly bent and locked, by static (holding) muscles.
