Typically developing children can distinguish themselves from their environment at around two years of age. They separate their sense of self from their sense of the environment around them. Unique learners don’t always mature through this stage in the same way. For example, unique learners may consider everything in their field of vision as belonging to themselves. They will grasp at people and objects, not understanding that they are separate.
